New Website

This website was made recently in 2026, and this blog will introduce our plans for different sections of this website. We hope this makes it easier to understand who we, TUSTEM, are as a community.

"About" and "Leaders", as the names suggest, introduce TUSTEM as a community and what we strive for, and our leaders who are key to organizing each of our events, among other duties.

"Blog" is where articles such as this are written, in order to explain our events and activities in detail. Especially important posts will also be added to the "News" section, which is visible on the main Home page.

"Events" is a summary of our future and past events. This is made to be a simple overview of what we will be and have been doing as a community, rather than in-depth explanations of each event. Information such as fees, dates, and short explanations are included, so please use this to decide whether you wish to come to future events, or to decide if you would like to become a TUSTEM leader or member!

If, after looking through our website, you decide that you are interested in joining our community as either a leader or member, please do not hesitate to apply via the "Join Us" section. You can also reach out to us casually at any time through the "Contact" page.

Event Introduction

Among our many events, we have three that we repeat often, and plan to continue hosting in the future. These are language exchanges, academic dinners, and coffee events.

Language Exchange

Language exchanges are our most frequently held events, usually on the first and third Thursdays of every month from 6.30pm. This is a casual get-together at Aobayama Commons, where participants and leaders get dinner from Midori Dining and eat together. Language exchanges are very casual, conversation-and-dinner events, and of course, participants can opt to not eat or bring their own dinners, if they prefer.

Academic Dinner

Academic dinners are a place for students to casually practice presentations of their research in English. Typically, two speakers will give a presentation roughly 10 minutes long, and we will have an hour afterwards for casual and open discussion, usually regarding the presentation or related studies. If you wish to participate as a presentor, please apply through our "Contact" page. This is also conducted at Aobayama Commons, and typically conducted over dinner, similar to Language Exchange.

Coffee Event

Coffee events are where a guest speaker who is a professional in their field is invited to have a short presentation, before a casual Q&A session with participants. Usually held over dinner or with coffee and snacks, past speakers include Professor Ohno, previous president of Tohoku University, and Professor Carl Wiemann, Past Nobel Prize recipient.

Conclusion

While we do not have a fixed schedule for academic dinners and coffee events, we aim to have one or more every semester as one of our key events. We hope they allow students of Tohoku University to gain more holistic understandings of the sciences and society, rather than focusing solely on their own majors. Of course, humanities majors are more than welcome to join as well!

We hope this new website helps you to understand TUSTEM better as a community, and we look forward to seeing you in our future events!
